Otherwise Michael is correct, network communication errors is mostly to do with the client and not the server. make sure it is the one that shows all the actions that the retrospect server is doing. The client Macs are on the same subnet as the Retro. I'm backing up to a external USB 2.0 drive with a Seagate 200GB drive in it .

Please type your message and try again. the second thing i suggest is to check that in the prefrences of the retrospect server in networking is set to not cancel the backup if network speed falls below "(whatever I guess I just have to set them up again using direct IP and hopefully that will fix things. Renaming the catalogue files in the Finder doesn't seem to work, as the catalogue name is obviously stored inside the catalogue file.

Now it seems as the connection is opened and THEN fails (with error -519).This always used to be true with Retrospect 6.1, but not so with Retrospect 8. See the link above for tech-level detail on fixing this, or you can uninstall and reinstall Retrospect Backup, and choose not to enable the Open File Backup at that time.
